World Trade Center 9/11 attacks

On September 11th 2001, Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four airliners in the United States with the intention to use them for suicide attacks. All four planes were lost, with everybody aboard killed, and the World Trade Center in New York City was devasted, with both towers destroyed, and the Pentagon in Washington DC also damaged. Almost 3,000 people died in these terrorist attacks, including at least 67 British nationals.

Following the attacks, the US along with a coalition, including Britain intervened in Afghanistan whose defacto Taliban government had allowed the country to be used as a safe-haven and base by Al-Qaeda. After the Taliban government was removed, British and coalition forces have remained in Afghanistan so as to deny the country (as well as neighbouring Pakistan, to the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, and their affiliates.

Britain (and the coalition generally) aim to gradually transfer responsibility for security to Afghan control, and hand-over lead responsibility by the end of 2014. After this date, the UK intends to continue to supported the elected Afghan government politicially, economically, and militarily.
